SUMMARY

See how Waverley developed an educational cross-platform

"See how Waverley developed an educational cross-platform, cross-browser CMS-based web app for a charity organization helping sick children in hospitals."

Waverley built, and still maintains, a hospital-restricted, cross-platform content portal that brings entertainment and education to sick children nationwide.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

GameChanger

GAME CHANGER

GameChanger was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Jim Carol, after his son Taylor was diagnosed with leukemia at age 11. Watching how the right content and connection helped Taylor through treatment, Jim built GameChanger to improve quality of life for hospitalized children, their families, and the caregivers who support them.

GameChanger delivers educational and entertaining content, and meaningful services, directly to patients and hospital staff nationwide, partnering with entertainment and technology companies to source donated content at scale. It is not affiliated with the sports scorekeeping app of the same name.

THE CHALLENGE
SOLUTION

What We Delivered

Waverley owned the platform’s full development lifecycle, from UI/UX design through delivery and ongoing operations. Design was treated as a first-class discipline rather than a downstream task: getting concepts and interaction patterns right early gave the distributed team a shared way to walk the client through decisions and estimate development time and cost per feature with confidence.

The team took a lean startup approach, prioritizing the highest-value functionality first and running short development cycles so real end users, children in hospital beds, could react to working software within weeks rather than months. That feedback loop shaped the roadmap for the rest of the engagement.

Waverley also matched GameChanger’s existing brand, logo, and color system precisely, then extended that visual identity as the platform grew into new integrations and partner surfaces.

INCLUDES

The Solution Includes

The core deliverable is a hospital-restricted web portal, accessible only from whitelisted hospital IP addresses over SSL, built to run in any browser on any device (mobile, tablet, desktop, or hospital-room TV) without platform-specific rework.

The CMS supports six content types: TV and movies, games, YouTube videos, educational video and file content, music, and Twitch-integrated live streams, alongside a moderated kids’ chat and a calendar of online and offline hospital events. Two admin tiers run the system: superadmins upload, moderate, and gate content from a shared library of donated media, while local hospital admins decide which content is available to which children based on individual needs.

Partner integrations extend the platform beyond static content. Kids playing Minecraft, for example, enter a custom world built specifically for GameChanger. The partner library keeps growing, and Waverley provides technical assistance to GameChanger as it negotiates with new partners such as Lionsgate.

TECH

Technology Overview

The platform is a cross-browser, cross-platform web application secured with SSL and IP allowlisting, so access stays limited to approved hospital networks. Uploaded video is converted to MP4 automatically, and the system integrates directly with partner platforms including Twitch and YouTube. Delivery ran in two-week sprints, with defects logged and triaged in Pivotal Tracker and automated test coverage maintained across key functional modules.

Key Takeaways

Unproven ideas need a partner comfortable with ambiguity. GameChanger was a first-of-its-kind concept with no existing playbook, so Waverley worked through prototyping and short iterations instead of forcing a rigid spec onto an unproven idea.

**Compliance and content rights can be engineering requirements, not afterthoughts. **Hospital IP restrictions and copyrighted donated content meant security had to be built in from day one and verified independently, not added just before launch.

**The real proof point is the multi-year relationship, not the initial delivery. **Waverley remains GameChanger’s platform partner for testing, backup, new integrations, and partner negotiations well past the original launch.

RESULTS

Results and Business Impact

GameChanger’s platform launched to selected hospitals and charity organizations across the United States after about a year of development, and has since scaled into a national footprint. Waverley remains the platform’s technical backbone: the team still runs testing and ongoing backup of the application and its content library.

The engagement has expanded well past the original build. Waverley provides technical assistance to GameChanger during partner negotiations, including with entertainment partners such as Lionsgate, and has extended the platform’s integrations toward VR and voice-controlled devices such as Amazon Echo. Waverley also donated a full MVP build to a GameChanger CharityBuzz auction, with proceeds going directly to the charity.
