GridPoint: iOS & Android Apps for Energy Analytics
"See how a team extension at Waverley developed native iOS & Android apps that integrate with the client’s cloud-based energy analytics platform"
Waverley designed and built native iPhone, iPad, and Android applications integrating with GridPoint's cloud-based energy analytics platform. The mobile applications enable facility and energy managers to monitor real-time device-level energy consumption across multiple sites and access critical data from anywhere, extending the platform's reach and efficacy to mobile users globally.
GridPoint
GridPoint, founded in 2003 and based in Arlington, Virginia, is a leader in comprehensive, data-driven energy management solutions leveraging real-time data collection, big data analytics, and cloud computing to maximize energy savings. GridPoint solutions are deployed at more than 11,000 sites with billions of customer data points collected. Customers include six of the top 10 US retailers by total sales, four of the top 10 US casual dining restaurants, seven of the top 20 US quick-serve restaurants, leading commercial and industrial enterprises, and major governmental and educational institutions.

Project Analysis
GridPoint engaged Waverley to bring their cloud-based energy analytics platform to mobile devices, enabling facility managers, energy managers, and other users to access granular data from anywhere in real time. The challenge was multi-dimensional: design a user interface that makes sense on 4-inch phones and 10-inch tablets, manage massive data sets with responsive performance, and maintain feature parity across iOS and Android while respecting each platform's design paradigm.
What We Delivered
Team Size: 8 specialists |** Duration:** 5 years (ongoing development and support)
Working closely with GridPoint's product management and internal engineering staff, Waverley gained thorough understanding of their cloud-based energy analytics platform and engineered highly-customized native applications for iPhone and iPad alongside a scalable, feature-identical Android app.
User Experience and Design: After detailed client interviews and discovery sessions, Waverley designers built an attractive mobile UI enabling users to navigate through rich sets of tables, graphs, and list-based information on a four-inch screen. A custom "Choose Column" function lets users customize the display so that the most important data are immediately visible with minimal scrolling. The UI uses overlays and transparency to direct the user and speed navigation. The design language proved so popular at GridPoint they extended it to the company's web product version.
Development Approach: All project work used Agile methodology with transparent progress tracking. The team interacted directly with product owners during daily stand-ups and delivered daily status reports on agreed schedules. GridPoint actively participated in design, testing, and development of the mobile applications. The Waverley team continued to work closely with GridPoint to map and extend the existing feature set to the much bigger iPad screen, allowing more data to be displayed simultaneously while maintaining usability.
Quality Assurance: The QA engineer ensured all bugs were reported in a bug tracking system (JIRA) and immediately assigned to developers for resolution. The QA Lead reviewed each bug and monitored the bug lifecycle throughout development and post-launch.
Ongoing Support: Waverley continues to cooperate closely with GridPoint's server-side development team, assisting in the creation of new APIs and maintaining mobile client compatibility as the platform evolves.
Results and Outcomes
GridPoint customers now have a means to access critical energy data on their mobile devices, extending the reach, convenience, and efficacy of GridPoint's cloud-based energy analytics platform. Key outcomes include:
Real-time mobile access to granular energy consumption data across multiple facilities
Responsive performance on devices ranging from 4-inch phones to 10-inch tablets
Intuitive interface enabling complex data exploration on small screens
Extended platform reach enabling facility managers to make decisions on-the-go
Long-term partnership supporting continuous platform evolution and new features
As one GridPoint executive noted: "We measure the success of projects based on whether they are on time, on budget and match scope. Waverley's team has repeatedly exceeded my expectations in all three dimensions." — Mark Danzenbaker, SVP Sales Marketing and Product Management, GridPoint
