SUMMARY

Mobile Retail

"See how Waverley developed a point-of-sales application for Sales and a global network of franchise users."

We implemented a modern, enterprise-grade Point-of-Sales (POS) application for a global retail company serving both internal sales teams and a worldwide network of franchise users. The solution provided offline-capable operations, seamless data synchronization, and an intuitive user interface designed specifically for retail environments. Within three months of deployment, the system delivered measurable improvements in sales velocity, operational efficiency, and customer engagement across the franchisee network.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

The Client

OUR CLIENT

Our client is a leading global innovator in professional tools and diagnostics, founded nearly 100 years ago with headquarters in the United States. The company maintains a dual distribution strategy: a direct sales force serving large enterprise accounts, and an extensive franchise network distributing products to local markets. The client sought to modernize its sales operations to keep pace with changing market expectations and internal growth objectives.

THE CHALLENGE

Project Analysis

The client's existing sales infrastructure was limiting growth and efficiency across multiple dimensions:

  • Operational constraints: Sales representatives spent excessive time on administrative tasks rather than customer interaction

  • Network limitations: The system required consistent internet connectivity, making it unsuitable for mobile sales environments

  • User experience issues: The existing platform was complex and required extensive training, increasing support costs and adoption friction

  • Data integration challenges: Manual batching processes created workflow interruptions and delayed visibility into real-time sales performance

  • Scale requirements: The system needed to support approximately 5,500 franchisees checking in multiple times daily, plus in-house sales operations—a scale not previously required

These challenges created an opportunity to reimagine the entire sales workflow: a modern, mobile-first POS system could eliminate administrative overhead, operate reliably without continuous connectivity, and provide real-time visibility into operations.

SOLUTION

What We Delivered

We designed and built a complete Point-of-Sales platform from the ground up, focusing on field operations and franchisee usability. The architecture consisted of two complementary components:

Client Application: A .NET-based application running on Windows 7 laptops (with limited Blackberry support) that provided a responsive, offline-capable interface. The client application maintained a local database synchronized with the server whenever internet connectivity was available, enabling sales representatives to operate seamlessly regardless of network status.

Server Infrastructure: A Java-based server built on JBoss, architected to handle approximately 5,500 franchisees accessing the system multiple times daily, plus enterprise sales teams. The server managed synchronization protocols, inventory updates, customer data, and reporting across the entire network.

User Interface & Experience: Our UI team conducted field research, traveling in company sales vans to understand how representatives actually worked with customers and systems. This insight-driven approach resulted in an interface that was:

  • Intuitive for new franchisees with minimal training

  • Functionally organized around actual sales workflows

  • Supported by comprehensive help documentation

Feature Set:

  • Transaction support for sales, order status, and credit line management

  • Searchable, real-time product and company information accessible in the field

  • Offline-capable local database with automatic synchronization when connected

  • Management reporting tools analyzing business metrics across multiple systems

  • Automatic synchronization of all sales, customer, and inventory transactions to corporate servers

Agile Methodology: We successfully transitioned the client's planned waterfall development approach to Agile practices. This shift proved critical to success: short development cycles enabled rapid feedback collection from end users and management, allowing the team to prioritize high-impact features and validate decisions much faster than traditional software development would have permitted. The positive experience with Agile inspired the client's IT organization to adopt these practices across other suitable projects.

RESULTS

Outcomes & Impact

The new POS application delivered measurable improvements across key business metrics within three months of deployment:

  • Sales impact: A 3% increase in sales directly attributable to franchisees spending more time in front of customers rather than managing administrative tasks

  • Efficiency gains: Administrative burden decreased substantially, with franchisees reporting 20% more time available for direct customer engagement

  • Operational improvements: Processing speed and turnaround time improved significantly; automated reporting made daily operations faster and easier to manage

  • Support cost reduction: Training time decreased substantially by focusing on business processes rather than system mechanics; support and customer service productivity improved considerably

Organizational Impact: Beyond the immediate ROI, the project created a template for modern software development within the client's organization. The successful adoption of Agile practices demonstrated the value of iterative development and user-centered design, leading to broader cultural shifts in how the client's IT department approached software projects.
